Service Day - The Sun Will Rise - Pack Swag Bags
Oct. 01, 2024 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Packing Swag Bags - The Sun Will Rise Foundation

5  volunteers needed to help pack the swag bags for the Grief Conference attendees!

About The Sun Will Rise:

The Sun Will Rise Foundation exists because Robyn Houston-Bean’s twenty year old son Nicholas Bean died to an accidental polysubstance overdose in May of 2015. Trying to find purpose and a reason to go on after a traumatic sudden loss, she knew that when she could function again, she would do something in his memory. Knowing the value of peer grief support groups, and the need for some in her area, she decided to start a Massachusetts grief support group called The Sun Will Rise, for those that have experienced the death of someone they care due to overdose or other substance use related causes. She had attended a group in Brighton and found it so helpful, but knew that one was needed closer, and set out to initiate one, so those on the South Shore and Braintree/Weymouth/Quincy Massachusetts area would not be alone in their grief. In December 2015, the grief group held its first meeting at the Braintree Town Hall. New groups followed in Quincy, MA and then Weymouth, MA.

The Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit charity, expanding from just overdose/substance use grief support, was created shortly after that. Its further dedication of providing education, awareness and prevention was a normal progression for those who loved Nick, not wanting other families to feel the utter devastation that they do. Speaking in front of parents, community members and teens at schools and other venues, Robyn has shared her family’s story to let people know that substance use disorder can happen to any family. She shares with parents, the risk factors that she feels she missed and urges teens to be part of the solution by helping their friends if they are worried about their use of alcohol or drugs. She tries to help erase the preconceived notions people have about those who use substances and erase the stigma.

In 2020, the peer grief support for a death from overdose or substance use related causes expanded to six more in person groups around Massachusetts providing even more Massachusetts residents a place where they could meet with others going through the same type of grief. With the covid pandemic, the in person meetings paused and the foundation started to offer online zoom grief support meetings, welcoming people from all over the country! Some of our groups decided to stay on the virtual meeting path and no longer meet in person, while new, in person groups started up and multiple zoom speciality groups came into existence. In 2023, we expanded our grief support to Portland Maine with our partnership with The Family Restored. Many independent grief groups that existed in Massachusetts have joined under the umbrella of The Sun Will Rise to combine forces to provide even more support. Today we have over 30 monthly peer grief support meetings.

These groups could not run without our volunteer facilitators! All our facilitators have the lived experience of having someone they care about die due to substance use related causes. These peers make the grief support for deaths due to substance use possible!

The Finding Support in Grief is a peer-support conference for people in Massachusetts who are bereaved by a death from substance related causes. Come share in a weekend of connection, hope, healing, fellowship, remembrance, and support.
This is a conference for anyone who self-identifies as bereaved (family member, friend, colleague, provider) from substance use-related causes.

Weekly Meeting, Town Hall, Kathleen Cummings
Oct. 17, 2024 12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Author of From the Top of the Bog to Boston:  A 20th-Century Irish Journey

Former Braintree Rotarian and Resident

Former Professor of American History

Book Description:  Born into a simple world where communication was face-to-face, transportation was on foot, bicycle or horse, and all of their fellow villagers shared Irish Catholic values, Larry and Betty emigrated to America where they found themselves in an increasingly diverse and complex world. They arrived separately from their poor Irish communities in Galway and Kerry during the 1950s. Larry had been banned from the home he loved, shunned by his family and fearful that he would never make it. Betty eagerly left her home, running from a deep and shameful secret. Their lives converged in Boston where they struggled to make a life that would bear no resemblance to the world they left behind. Cummings weaves together the compelling stories of her parents’ journeys, setting them within the historical forces that shaped Ireland, Boston and the greater global changes that transformed a generation.

Town Hall, Rachel Calabrese, ConfiKids
Jan. 16, 2025 12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.

ConfiKids, Inc. is a nonprofit organization providing opportunities for children of limited financial means to participate in enrichment activities so that they may pursue their interests and passions, develop new skills, establish new relationships, and, ultimately, build confidence.

Rachel Calabrese founded ConfiKids drawing from her own childhood experiences. Despite her passion for dance, financial constraints forced her to discontinue lessons, impacting her self-confidence and social connections. As an adult working as a marketing professional in various non-profit roles, Rachel witnessed the need firsthand as families struggled to financially cover recreational programs for their children. Responding to this gap, she quietly raised funds to offer scholarships for activity-based programs, recognizing the vital role such opportunities play in children's social development and confidence-building. In 2016, Rachel left her career supporting other non-profits to establish ConfiKids, Inc. and officially launched scholarship initiatives in 2017.

At ConfiKids, we advocate for every child to have the chance to flourish, regardless of their financial means to access suitable extracurricular programs. ConfiKids works directly with parents, guardians, educators, coaches, and mentors who apply for children to receive financial support to participate in such activities.

Children eligible for participation are those in grades 1 through 8 who are enrolled in the free lunch program at their school.

MLK Citizen of the Year, Justine Huang
Jan. 30, 2025 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

BRAINTREE, MA — Braintree will honor the recipient of the 2025 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Citizen of the Year during a ceremony this week.

This year's winner is Justine Huang, who is involved with multiple initiatives and groups locally, including the Chinese American Association of Braintree.

The Braintree Rotary, of which Huang is a member, shared a message of celebration for Huang.

"No surprise to us - one of our own Rotarians recognized as Martin Luther King Jr, Citizen of the Year," the group said. "Justine Huang has brought to our club infectious energy as a passionate member of the Braintree community. We are very proud and feel so lucky to have her as a member of our club."

The ceremony is scheduled for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Cahill Auditorium at Braintree Town Hall.
